Enlightenment etc.

  • May. 18th, 2009 at 5:05 PM

Before I forget, a (relatively) short note on the much appreciated learnings imbibed in the recent past!

- You can have marathons of sitcoms other than F.R.I.E.N.D.S. The mantra is - STOP COMPARING. A season and a half of 'How I met your mother' down in 2 weekends, definitely classifies it as impressive.

- If you find Barney Stinson's crude humour more entertaining than the Ted- Robin romance, it doesn't necessarily mean you're turning into a guy. If you are really worried, all you've got to do is go watch Grey's anatomy. Makes you all sentimental and mushy? See, you're back on track!

- You can get emotionally involved in a cricket match. The fact that you were frowning all through dinner yesterday, at the place which serves your favoritest dessert ever (Chocolate Bomb at Little Italy, if you haven't tried it yet, well, God save you), just because Deccan Chargers lost to Kings XI Punjab, pretty much justifies your Dad knocking the sofa's arm off when Kapil Dev's wicket was taken in some random match during World Cup '83.

- There is nothing like too much chocolate. There is nothing such as I-dislike-x-chocolate either. But there is something like I-like-x-chocolate-better-than-y-chocolate. What else explains the Diary Milk lying the refrigerator for more than a week, just because there is so much of Dark chocolate to binge upon?

- The irritating fight between the multiplex guys and the movie makers, which has ensured no new movie or music releases these days, is actually good in a way, because it makes you revisit all the songs you used to like wonsaponatime and have totally forgotten now. Awesome they are, you realise.

- While grocery shopping at your favorite super market, try and check beforehand if the card machine is working. There are actually chances that you pick stuff for like two hours, and then go to the billing counter to be told that they can only accept cash. And you won't have that much cash ever, you being you. So just check next time.

- You will never find the perfect red shoes you have been looking for forever in any of the best shoe stores in the city. And then you will find them in, wait for this, the Bata store near your house! But ofcourse, they wont be available in your size, but that's a different issue altogether.

- You can actually like colors other than blue. At times. Red is, for example, you realise, is a pretty nice color. Ok, definitely not better than blue, but it's pretty damn good.

- Mondays can actually be nice (!!).Not as nice as Fridays, but nice nevertheless. Even if it is a hot summer monday afternoon in Hyderabad, you can actually be happy,  provided the airconditioning in office is working just fine, there is really strong coffee available on demand, and you're allowed to download music. And after a long time, you've all the time in the world to sip this coffee, browse the net, all the while listening to the music you just downloaded.

- And ofcourse, wanting to, and actually being able to post on your blog twice within a week's span feels good. So. Very. Good.

Time for some serious cricket!

  • Apr. 17th, 2008 at 8:27 PM

In about 13 hours from now, the Indian Premier League battle would begin! And this time I am in a win-win situation, because of the 8 teams, I am supporting four!

Chennai Superkings
; ofcourse, I have to respect the Tam roots!
Delhi Daredevils; for the Delhi-UP connection, see, Delhi is like neighbourhood to us.
Deccan Chargers; oh, I am a Hyderabadi now, 6 years in this city, ensures you are one.
Mumbai Indians; now that I am married to a Marathi, who couldn’t care less about the team, but then, I need to have my options hedged.

Cool huh? Ofcourse, the list will be narrowed down once the first round of matches takes place. Till then, happy cricket-watching!

And oh, I thought of supporting Bangalore too, since it has Dravid, but that would be taking it a bit too far. I guess. So let it be.

TV shows and all that

  • Apr. 16th, 2008 at 6:33 PM

I am now an official TV addict. Actually, I am more of a TV shows addict, which is basically taking it a step further and includes downloading old episodes of the series and watching them as well.

It started with F.R.I.E.N.D.S back at K. I have all the seasons on CDs, have watched every possible episode numerous times by now, and cannot help but mouth the dialogues while watching the re-runs. And luckily, the Dude is as hooked, and is forever game for a Friends Marathon with chilled beer and Pizza. As for the favorite character in the series– Of course it is Funny Man Bing!

Then came The OC. Not a comedy, and definitely not comparable to the above classic, but the drama revolving around the Orange County elite is capable of keeping one engrossed. Not a guy thing at all. And The Dude maintains safe distance whenever I watch this, lest I subject him to ‘extremely uninteresting’ details of the plot. I started watching Season 1 with the Pure Veg roomie, and that was good fun, we could ooh – aah at all the mush and bitch about the evil characters. I directly jumped to season 4 which is running at present, and out of pure curiosity as to how each character landed where they are, am downloading the missed portions. Favourite character(s) – Seth Cohen, and Sandy-Kirsten.

And ofcourse! Grey’s Anatomy, how can I miss thee? I have a whole post about it. Started in London, when there was nothing much to watch, and started from season 2, and got the first 3 seasons gifted by Pure veg roomie. Was downloading each episode of season 4, the day after it aired in the US, because here, we are too far behind but then the strike happened, and now we are waiting for the 24th. And depressing though the story tends to be most of the time, I am addicted. And the Dude is not too happy, because every Friday night means slow internet, thanks to the 400 MB download. Favorite character(s), Christina – Burke before Burke left, now, nobody as such, definitely not Meridith, perhaps Lexie, let’s see.

Gossip Girl and Ugly Betty started because of lack of anything to watch thanks to the strike. But the former is just 13 episodes (which I am done with) and the latter got boring. Plus Gossip Girl has the irritating similarity of characters with The OC. Each of them has a twin in the OC. So not too keen on continuing really, though favourite character would be Good Boy Danny.

Then the reality shows. However fake they might seem. However staged they are supposed to be, it is just fun to watch reality shows. All the competitive ones like Top Chef, Project Runway and Shear Genius. I just love them. Closer home, there is MTV Roadies, which inspite of being extremely kiddish, visibly fake, and full of *beeps*, I don’t miss. I even used to follow V Get Gorgeous when it was aired. And Indian Idol and Nach Baliye, much to the annoyance of The Dude. Though now he has kind of given up and concentrates on playing Hidden and Dangerous whenever I am watching any of these shows.

With the way I am going now, for all the comments I have passed on the Pure Veg roomie for setting an alarm for 2:30 AM so as to watch the re-run of ‘Kaisa Yeh Pyar hai’ I have nothing to say in my defense now. And no, I am not complaining J .

Randomest ramble ever

  • Sep. 27th, 2007 at 8:23 AM

I simply have to write. See, whenever I don’t blog for a while, I end up blaming lack of interesting enough things in life for it. But right now, there are so many things I would like to record and remember (that’s what I blog for right?), that I have to write. Whatsoever. So here we go!

We won! And I caught ONLY the last over of the match. Why you ask? Well, because all the seniors at work conveniently dumped their jobs on the insignificant few at us, and disappeared. Where you ask (or don’t, I am telling you anyways)? To a nearby place to watch the WHOLE match. Talk about unfair. Hmph. Well, no complaints, because watching the last over, standing on my toes, and peeping into the neighboring floor (they have a TV on the work-floor for heaven’s sake! Two in fact! Talk about unfair. Hmph - repeat) and then cursing the tall guy in front, and then stomping away after the six, and then getting back anyways, because, well you couldn’t afford to see how it went after all, then standing with the mouth wide open as the ball went into the air, and then jumping and screaming like a banshee when Sreesanth took the catch, and then telling everyone on the way back that we won ( of course they already knew) and so and so forth, can be equally, if not more, fun. (Phew, that wins the longest sentence award: D). So, I am not really complaining.

Saturday was night out with The Dude, and I was all for some serious partying, when I found out that the place was invaded with Cricket freaks. So I spent the next 10 minutes grumbling about how the evening was ruined, and the hour and a half after that, enjoying what I think will be my favorites match ever. I haven’t had more fun watching a match, and of course, we beat the so called best!

Sunday night was Indian Idol Grand Finale, and I am depressed even now thinking about it. All I can say is I am glad I didn’t sit through the entire 3 hours of pain, for the most ridiculous judgment in the history of mankind (ok, I am exaggerating, but it was horrid. Pah! No more audience poll based silly, stupid, biased shows!)

And of course, the Sunday evening drive to one really pretty place. The Shamirpet Lake was much above my expectations, and the weather did an awesome job projecting it even better. I am so going there again!

Oh ya, I made cake. Choco-walnut cake. And guess what, it actually tasted good (I wanted to say awesome, but I don’t want smart comments about ‘self-appraisal’, ‘poor souls who had to eat it’ etc). Fact is, I burnt the sample ( see, so smart of me, I know my limitations, and hence get proactive (!!?)), but the final version was awesome! There. I said it.

Ok that was a fairly long ramble, and I myself tend to avoid blog posts which are little too long, but couldn’t help it, long week I had. But I will stop now. So till then, oh, ok, wait. Last thing. Tuesday, I did this cool ‘work from home’ thing, which was nice, as in lazy nice, but I realized I eat twice as much if I am at home. Yikes! So that’s not happening again. Ok, that’s about it. Till then, Ciao!

P.S. Lime wire rocks! The past few days, I have …. Ok nothing, I said I would stop. So I will. Tada.

Ah well...

  • Sep. 11th, 2007 at 10:17 AM

It’s such a boring day, it’s not funny. I am done with my work, and I have read all the blogs, and a few more blogs through these blogs, checked orkut, gmail, and the K yahoo groups’ mail. There are still 2 hours to go before I get to leave and I have got no new mail in my inbox for like 3 hours now ( well of course, not counting one from Infrastructure and Logistics explaining proper use of power sockets in office. Wow). And now I am really bored.

So what’s new? Hmmm, well let me think.

I love the special interest that the Transport department at work has taken in me to get me well acquainted with places and people of the city who I didn’t believe existed till now. They have resolved to make me take an hour and a half atleast to cover the 10 Kms distance to home. More so, they have taken an oath that I should be introduced to every Godforsaken alley of every ‘I-couldn’t-care-less-about-your-existence’ areas of the city , and so many times so, that I should be atleast able to recognize all the ‘Radhika Theatres’ and ‘Krishna Family restaurant and Bars’ in all these areas. Also, they have decided that I should be put on the roster* with individuals who are bent upon giving me a crash course in the new definitions of colonies/areas. As per the new definitions, if you take a right from A.S. Rao Nagar, and go on for another 5 kms and then take a left, and go on for another 3 kms, and then take another left, and then the immediate right and then the 3rd left, the place would still be called A.S.Raonagar, and not Kapra, as the address- boards, and the direction signs suggest. See, so much to learn.

And then the gym, I am such a regular visitor now, that Disgusted face actually recognizes us (well, he came to ask me why I came only like once a week, but well, that’s beside the point).

And of course, how can we forget Indian Idol. Things just got so much better with Emon getting eliminated. That’s how it should be. Eliminate the good singers before hand, so that the competition is now between an awesome and a totally useless contestant. Considering everyone already knows who the better singer is, and also that there is a perfectly good chance that he will not win (come on, we need to support our region, who cares if our guy cannot carry notes that well!), atleast they will not try and get back home early from work on Friday. So much better for our economy that is. Right?

On a different note, Iyengar Boy is now married, and that makes it two of the two people in 3 months to have broken the ‘I-will-not-get-married-before-I-turn-32’ resolution. J

Anyways , during the course of this post, we realized that we might as well go home , and watch Grey’s anatomy episodes we downloaded recently (courtesy : Limewire). But not till we get to see more of SainadhPuram, Kamala Nagar, Nagarjuna Nagar and so much more of the yet-not-discovered Hyderabad. Ah, the thrills life has to offer! Till then, Ciao.

Being me

  • Jul. 10th, 2007 at 2:34 PM

Everybody has a perception or a definition of what being cool is all about. Or what kind of talk makes one sound intellectual. What kind of taste in music, food and books, makes one sound so very in, and happening. But at the same time, it isn’t necessary that you match your own definition, or opinion. In fact, in my case, I more often than not, am a complete mismatch to what my perception of ‘being in’ is all about.

That is not all. I am in general what they call corny. I watch mush flicks over and over again, and get fully emotional and cry for the same scenes as I do each time. Even though it is clichéd, I think it’s awesome when someone gets you a birthday cake as a surprise. I think it is romantic to get flowers on Valentines Day or have a song dedicated for you at the restaurant you are eating at. All of it clichéd, corny, but so very me. And all of it things quite a few have joked about, saying ‘That’s so childish, and so very corny!!’. There has been more than one occasion when I have joined the ‘cool’ people and laughed at all these things just to sound like them, grown up, and above all this. But at the end of it doesn’t really work.

So, as I am surrounded by the happening lot most of the times in most of the places, I still cant help but feel like dancing every time ‘Sajnaji Vari Vari’ is played, or pick a Ken Follet over a ‘Zen and the art of motorcycle riding’ at Crosswords. My eyes refuse to watch Udayan Mukherjee give the stock updates, and die to flip over and listen to Chandler Bing’s sarcasm instead. And I still hope that there is a bunch of flowers waiting for me at home when I get back J

Grey's anatomy

  • Apr. 20th, 2007 at 6:06 PM

After a F.R.I.E.N.D.S crazy phase (which somehow is still on) Star World had me waiting every week for episodes of The OC, Desperate Housewives and Seinfeld. Then for 3 months, I survived comfortably with no TV. And then the fateful London trip happened and made me realize the importance of a television, especially in a place where you don’t really have much to do once back from work. More so it made me realize that not every place gives you many channels, when they are paid, and also that, not all channels that are free are in English. And yeah, that not all English channels are Star World, and definitely not a combination of all old hits and their reruns from ABC/NBC.

So I was left with 5 channels, 2 of which were still watchable, but somehow only on weekends or early in the morning. But the good thing that happened was Sunday evenings, after the day long walking around the city to ‘see’ places, they telecast Grey’s anatomy. Two episodes. Back to back.

I don’t know how I missed out on this series on Star World, but it has got everything to make an ‘All-you-can-ask-for’ entertainer. Actually make that an ‘All-I-can-ask-for’, and all I ask for, is an interesting story line, nice looking people, more good people than bad people (actually only good people is better, who get turned into bad people (for some twist or something), due to circumstances. And for a short while please. There, you have my happy worldJ), mush, and lots of other happy stuff. Must say, a story about interns in a hospital can’t always be happy, you have people dying and all, but somehow, I didn't seem to mind that here, it seemed inevitable, though I did seem to hope and wish at times that a certain patient survived.

And yeah, this series has a nice sound track, aptly placed, and very listenable even later. I did download a few, and a personal favorite is one called ‘Sunny Road’. It’s by an ‘Emiliana Torrini’ and the lyrics, well, are not really happy, but sound nice, and like I said, suited the situation really well on the series.

I sorely miss having a TV now, but I am somehow going to adjust for the next two months, catching reruns on weekends at friends, relatives, or even better, watching them on the net (which by the way was the reason I survived the weekdays last month. The place had awesome high speed internet, and videos would stream with ease, the only work was to search for them. And south-park and That 70s show were always the easier ones to find. So ended up watching entire seasons of those). Anyways, the situation is much different here, and I might as well wait and probably read the summary of the Season 3 episodes on Wikipedia. I know it spoils the fun, but there is no suspense here, and no ‘shocking’ twists, so it really doesn’t matter. Plus, I am curious. And impatient. And it’s Friday. So off I go!

Till then, Ciao!

And.... we are back!!

  • Dec. 6th, 2006 at 5:32 PM

It’s been long. Really long in fact. But I am back, and am proud of myself for it. More so because I am back not cos it’s been long, which it has, but because I am bugged. Which is a good enough reason to blog. Infact it is one of the top ten reasons, in my list of ‘ 101 reasons why one should blog at all’.

Why I am bugged is a long story. All I can say is living alone in a huge 2-bedroom apartment for a whole month, not having a gas connection and hence not getting tea in the morning, not having a television, not having enough work at office, and not having a smaller apartment to move into, is not really my idea of fun. But then life’s not always fun.

But we shall not focus on the negatives in life. We are adopting a more optimistic attitude henceforth. That’s our resolution for the New Year, which by the way began on the 23rd of November. Happy Birthday to me! A lot’s been happening otherwise. Life’s busy, and no, it’s not because of work. Weekends specifically are movies, long drives, plays (actually one play, a spoof on Hamlet, by this group called Evam from Chennai and I loved it!), dancing, lots of F.R.I.E.N.D.S and Sex and the city, and in general quite a bit of loafing around. And trust me, that’s tiring enough! And yep, definitely a lot of fun.

Hmmm, considering the fact that the tone of this post (and yep, my mood too) has taken definite turn to the other extreme by now, its probably right to conclude that while ‘being bugged’ still remains a good reason to blog, blogging also acts as an effective solution to cure a bugged mood. In fact I think, this is going to be one of the main ways we will be sticking on to our ‘optimistic attitude resolution’. So, bottom line is, when bugged, blog. So, purpose being solved, I think I would actually be better off discontinuing this ramble. Lest I end up ensuring that the few people who still have the patience to check this poor ignored place for updates at times, stop doing so in future. But seriously, in just one more round of self-appreciation I repeat, I am back! :)

Ok. I cant’ bear any more rains. True, I claim to love rains in general, and prefer a cloudy sky to the blazing sun any day, but, well, there is a limit to everything right? Every day, and I mean every day, at around 3 or 4, the place grows extremely dark, and in a few minutes it starts raining, rather pouring! And to be honest, it looks so beautiful, especially from my cubicle here, right next to the glass walls. But then comes the much more obvious consequence; 1. Major cab delays 2. A room full of water waiting to be mopped every half an hour. Too much!

Hmm… weekend’s here, yay! The best part about working long hours is that you never realize when the week ends… I love Saturdays. It’s like this beginning of a two-day long vacation, when I know, that the next day is free too. But that obviously means that I hate Sundays, and I do! Its like, ‘damn, its Monday tomorrow’. But then Monday is fine again, as it gets me closer to the next weekend… funny huh?

Harry Potter 6 releases tomorrow… and me going to The Odyssey to buy it, well that’s something to look forward to. Wonder, who Rowling plans to kill this time? (Kinda think it’s going to be Hagrid. But then, that’s what I thought last time, when she killed Sirius.) Doesn’t matter as long as Dumbledore stays, he makes the story seem so much safer!

Am watching Friends religiously, as usual. Just miss having all the episodes to watch and rewatch, and rewatch again on my desktop. Well, miss my desktop itself, and my I–tunes, and my music, and my wallpapers, and my screen savers, and yahoo messenger, and 24 hours net, everything!!!! Waaaaaah!!!!

A small change in my address in the records had resulted in me reaching home in almost half of the time I used to take earlier. Reason: I happen to live at this place called Ameerpet, which comes just before this place called Begumpet. And, I live at the end of ameerpet. Now since I mentioned Ameerpet in my address, they would put me in a cab with people from all over ameerpet, every possible corner of it, and as a result I was always the last to be dropped home. But now, I changed it to Begumpet, and so me is the first drop :) in a cab full of Begumpetians, Yippee!!!

I am damn hungry, and bored. Guess I will go say hi to the boss now. Too much of rambling isn’t good for health …till then, ciao!

P.S.: Why do the smileys in MS word change to 'J's in LJ??

May. 6th, 2005

Ok, If I were to find words which would aptly describe my present mood , they would be ranging from irritated, angry, upset, to sick and frustrated. But since I have decided not to let everybody and anybody bother me anymore especially about things which I can do nothing about, I am just going to let it go, and think about things much more interesting.

Firstly, lemme get on to some of the latest Hindi music, which has caught my attention, either cause its so awesome or cause it cannot be called music in the first place. Of the recent releases 'Piya Bole' from 'Parineeta' is definitely awesome. Sonu Nigam, as usual rocks, and the music is so very soothing. Then theres 'Woh Lamhe' from 'Zeher' . Its by a new group who call themselves 'Jal'. The song also has this really catchy Remix version, which is equally good, if not better. Coming to the fast numbers, 'Tauba Tauba' from 'Kaal' is pretty decent, but dint like 'Kaal Dhamaal' much. Also, Kunal Ganjawaala's 'Channa ve' is really really cool.

Coming to the bad stuff :(.... where do I start. Ok, theres this  super frustrating song in 'zeher' which goes like 'Agar tum mil jaao', and everytime I hear it, I go into a deep depression, its so PATHETIC. I just hope I dont hear it today, given the mood I am already in, I will never ever recover. Then there aresuper patheitc songs from super pathetic movies like 'jaane hoga kya' and 'kya kool hain hum', and I better stop this here, as I am already deeper in the dumps now!

I have become a complete TV addict now. If not Tv, its movies on the comp. Its horrible, how I keep watching reruns of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, and the same music videos over and over again. Well that decides that one of the very first purchases I am going to make, once I start working is  television. Another fun thing I have been doing is re-reading my Enid Blyton and Archies comics collection:D, something that never bores me.

Am busy with the last days of shopping and packing, before I leave for Gurgaon on the 15th. Just for a week though. After which its back to 'Good ol' Hyd'. It is Good ol Hyd now, guess I have finally made peace with the entire situation, and have decide to enjoy myself there, should't be that bad , huh??

Thats it for now I guess, and seriously, am feeling so much better( and less irritated, frustrated , blah blah blah...), than when I came. Till then, Ciao...

Yet another week begins....

  • May. 18th, 2004 at 2:42 PM

ok, so I am back from my self extended weekend at home, which was as usual awesome.... Anyways, its back to serious work now, cos finally i am having serious doubts about how the hell this works going to finish before 28th ( thats my self fixed deadline...i dont intend to work a day beyond that). Anyways, managed to finish calls to chennai ... and started on bombay...so i have two more cities to go and then i can work on the final report...

GP has left to Bangkok!!!!!!! For the whole week!!!! I dont know if i should feel happy cos theres going to be no supervision or sad that I dont have my guide around...Anyways, lets see..

I had promised myself that i would not waste much time on the net today.... and thankfully did manage that to quite an extent... but this blog break was very essential after those continous calls.Worst part is that, to get my information , it should take around 5 to 7 minutes, but i end up spending much more time. As soon as the respondent comes to know that the call is from the company( which is to be necessarily revealed if you wasnt any information at all), the first thing they think of is to clarify all their doubts; be it about the schemes available, how to use a particular facility, or simply how bad they think the signals are!! And it takes real long to tell them to call up customer care to solve their problems. .. anyways, have gotten quite used to it after completing 3 cities, so hope the remaining two take lesser time....

Haven't managed to see 'main hoon na' still and dont think i will finally...spent the entire weekend watching whatever was shown on MTV and V, apart from the political stuff ( thnx to daddy). Our roomie is leaving to Mumbai for a week, and that means no music system (sob!)... Dunno how we are going to manage. Guess its going to be back to longer hours on phone (not that it ever reduced....)

Had a small 'get together kind of thing' at the guys appartment last friday....ashwini and dammy were also there, and we had brought along Prerna( our roomie) too. It was good fun... and the largest gathering in Delhi till now i guess (there were 8 of us K-ites)....though as Ron said, I did spend quite some time on phone ( cant help it i guess....:P!!!)

Its really boring to think that i have to go back and start calling again, but I have no choice, else i will be stuck here after the 28th , and thats strictly impossible!!! So i guess i will sign off for now... till then........ Ciao
